Contestants must have a valid California drivers license to operate a 22' cutaway bus, and since February 1, 2005, have a clean driving record with no chargeable/avoidable accidents, and not have had a suspension, any disciplinary action or more than three unauthorized absences. This information must be certified by the person authorized to sign requests for pull notices for the organization. If you have any questions regarding eligibility, please call us at 916-920-8018.
Organizations are being asked to limit the number of competitors to no more than four from a facility. So, if you do operate more than 1 facility, you can enter a team from each! There will be individual and team trophies. Team scores will be determined by calculating a team average, so teams may consist of 2, 3 or 4 contestants. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three individual finishers and to the members of the top team. A team consists of contestants employed by the same organization. The highest scoring rural contestant will be eligible for an RTAP Scholarship of $750 plus the entry fee towards the cost of competing in the National Paratransit Roadeo, May 31st - June 1st, in New Orleans. Remember, time spent participating in a Roadeo counts towards a driver’s annual in-service training requirement!
Contestants will be judged on their pre-trip inspection, wheelchair loading and securement, and smoothness of operation. The actual course will include serpentine, forward offset street, right and left turns, passenger stops, right and left hand reverses, right tire clearance, lift deployment, diminishing clearance and emergency stop skill tests. There will not be any uniform inspection or written tests. There will be time limits for completing the pre-trip, wheelchair loading and securement, and driving portions of the Roadeo.
The course will be available for practice starting at 10:00 am through 4:30 pm on Saturday. Individual practice times will be assigned prior to the Roadeo. Vehicles for practice and the Roadeo are being provided by Sunline Transit Agency. You should not bring a vehicle for the competition. Come early to practice both the driving and wheelchair securement portions of the competition. Also, on Saturday there will be a Judges’ Training Session from 1-2 pm. Judges and contestants are required to check in at 8:00 am on Sunday. The Roadeo will start on Sunday at 9:30 am, and will be followed with lunch. Team and individual awards will follow.
WINNERS OF THE ROADEO WILL BE RECOGNIZED AT OUR SPRING CONFERENCE & EXPO AWARDS LUNCHEON ON APRIL 22, 2008, AT THE SQUAW CREEK RESORT!
Please register by February 25!
Be a Roadeo Judge!
All competing organizations are requested to supply at least one person to participate as a judge. To operate the Roadeo smoothly, we will need about 35 judges. Judging is easy, no experience is required. Judges will meet on Sunday morning at 8:00 am to select their assignments. Judges are invited to the Saturday practice session and the Sunday lunch and awards presentation. Spouses, friends, co-workers, managers and Board members are all invited to participate as judges.
