Presented by: Selena Barlow, Transit Marketing LLC
Public speaking is one of the most effective and lowest cost marketing strategies available to small transit agencies. It can be used to increase ridership, build community support and solicit funding. Yet many transit professionals fail to use this powerful tool due to fear or simple lack of awareness. This class will address:
- Why public speaking is so effective.
- What public speaking can accomplish for a transit agency.
- Who to speak to and how to solicit speaking opportunities.
- Preparing an effective presentation.
- Using tools like PowerPoint, videos and handouts effectively.
- Tips for speaking with presence, overcoming nerves, improving impact.
- Resources for learning to be a better speaker.
Participants will have the opportunity to prepare and make a simple presentation followed by a constructive critique. Selena Barlow, owner of Transit Marketing, LLC, is a marketing consultant who works exclusively within the public transit industry. During the past 20 years, she has worked with more than 100 transit agencies to conduct market research, develop strategic marketing plans, design new system identities and create promotional campaigns. While Ms. Barlow works with transit agencies of all sizes, her real love is working with rural transit providers who have an incredibly close relationship with their communities and users.
Prior to forming her own business in 1988, Ms. Barlow held positions as Chief of Marketing for Metro-Dade Transit in Miami, and was Director of Marketing for Sun Tran in Tucson. In addition to her consulting practice, she conducts marketing training programs and workshops for transit professionals through Universities and industry organizations. She holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from the University of Florida. Ms. Barlow is an avid science fiction reader and notes that most futuristic societies in sci-fi books rely heavily on public transportation. Therefore, she is optimistic about the future of our industry.
