CalACT | California Association for Coordinated Transportation

Representing Small, Rural, & Specialized Transportation Providers Statewide

May 20, 2008

Dear CalACT Members:

Transit is facing a very difficult time with all of the proposed cuts in the Governor’s budget. Now is the time for all of us to get involved and contact your elected officials to tell them to Vote No on cuts to State Transit Assistance Funds (STA).

CalACT is now planning several activities to assist our members with educating our legislators as well as the Governor about the impact the budget cuts will have on transportation services and riders in California.

  • Transit Rally: June 17, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at the Capital

Attend the transportation rally and bring several riders to advocate for funding and to discuss the impact the budget cuts will have on their lives. Meet at 10:00 on the south steps of the Capital. Register online here…
  • Alert the Media about the Impact of Cuts to Riders

CalACT will be sending a press release to you before or after the rally to send to your local media regarding the “Don't Stop the Bus, Say No to Transit Budget Cuts” campaign.
  • Provide Information on the Impact of the Cuts to CalACT for a Fact Sheet.

Please send me information about how these budget cuts will affect your agency and your riders. If you have names of riders that would allow their story to be printed that would be even better. Please remember to get a signed release form from the rider.
  • Write Letters to notify legislators how these budget cuts will affect your agency

Use the sample letter as a tool to send to legislators; do not copy it word for word. Please tell your own story about how the cuts will affect your organization and your riders. Download sample letter [Word Format]
  • Call and/or Visit Your Legislators.

Call your legislators to educate them about the effects the STA cuts will have on transportation services in your community. Schedule a time to visit with them at the Capital.

  • Have Riders Call Elected Officials

CalACT will send posters to you to place in your vehicles with a list of telephone numbers of the Governor, their Senators, and Assembly members. Urge your riders to call while riding on the bus. We also request that you have a cell phone on the vehicle with the driver, or a volunteer, so that riders can have access to a phone. Inform your riders to keep the message simple when stating how these cuts will affect their lives and daily routines, i.e., doctor visits, school, work, gas prices, and their economics.
  • Have Riders Write Elected Officials

CalACT will provide blank post cards to be placed on your busses for riders to write their legislators and Governor as they are riding the bus. Please place a box onboard for riders to deposit the cards into and then mail the completed cards to CalACT at 865 Howe Avenue, Suite 330, Sacramento, CA 95825, and/or bring them to the Capital for the Transit Rally. If riders do not know their legislators have them write Dear Assemblyman or Senator and not address the letter.

  • E-Mail Your Legislators and Governor

To send an e-mail to the Governor you need to visit his website at http://gov.ca.gov/interact and enter your comments. To e-mail Assembly members or Senators type their last name in the e-mail address listed below: Assemblymember.lastname@assembly.ca.gov or senator.lastname@senate.ca.gov

Don’t wait to get involved! Make your voice heard and call your legislators to tell them:

“Don't Stop the Bus, Vote No on Transit Budget Cuts!”

If you have any questions or need additional information please call me at 916-920-8018.

Sincerely,

Jacklyn Montgomery
CalACT Executive Director
